Birds and Bats

Brown Bat
Most people don’t realize this, but most birds and all bats are protected by law in the state of Oregon. It is illegal to harm or kill them. If you have a problem with either of these nesting in or on your home, it is recommended that you contact a Professional to identify the species and discuss the proper and legal plan of action.
BIRDS
A successful program would include replacing any and all weak screen and closing off any small gaps found on the roof to prevent nesting or roosting. Sometimes this may require waiting until the young have left the nest. In the state of Oregon, there are only 3 birds that are NOT protected by law; the European Starling, the House Sparrow, and the Rock Dove (Pigeon). These birds can be removed at any time. All other birds and their nests cannot be touched or removed until it is no longer in use.
Another common problem bird in Oregon is the Chimney Swift. This is a protected species and as its name implies, it nests in chimneys. If you do not already have a chimney cap, it is recommended that you have one installed to prevent this problem. Chimney swifts can be quite loud when they are young and when a large number of birds have roosted in the same chimney, this can become quite an issue for the homeowner. Affordable Wildlife Response would be more than happy to give you an estimate for chimney cap installation.
BATS
Bats have been known to roost in attics as well as underneath the siding on houses. If they remain outside, they are extremely beneficial as they work wonders on the insect population. However, when they roost inside the structure, they can pose a health risk to the homeowner as their guano (droppings) can be quite hazardous. The first step is to remove the bats by installing a one-way door which allows the bats to leave but not re-enter. This cannot be installed until late August-early September when the young have grown. After 3-5 days, exclusion work can begin to eliminate any openings that the bats might be using as well an any additional openings to eliminate the potential of a return. Bat houses are also available to encourage bats to roost nearby just not in the house.
