Opossum

Opossum
The Virginia Opossum is North America’s only native marsupial. It is indigenous to Eastern United States. It is believed by some that this animal was introduced to the west as a source of food during the Great Depression. They were also kept as exotic pets (it is currently illegal to own any wildlife without a permit from the Department of Fish and Wildlife).
The Virginia Opossum, or Possum for short, is very adaptive and can survive in many different environments. It can be found all over the United States. They are usually solitary and nomadic. They are generally not very aggressive. One of the opossum’s main forms of defense is to play dead. They slow their body functions enough to appear dead. This can last a few minutes to a few hours. Many people have been fooled by this tactic and panicked at the thought of a dead animal on their property.
Opossums mate in the spring and can have up to 15 in a litter. Not all of the young survive however. If they are not able to reach a teat in time, they will not survive.
Opossums are omnivorous and can probably find food in your back yard right now.
