Stinging Insects

Wasp

Stinging insects come in many different forms. The most common are bees and wasps. Some of these insects are beneficial and can used to our advantage. For example, honey bees are used quite often on farms to help pollinate the crops. However, when these insects are nesting on a home or on the property, the can be quite a nuisance and quite dangerous for those of us that have allergic reactions to their stings. The most aggressive stinging insects, in my experience, are Yellow Jackets, Hornets and Bumble Bees. Honey bees are generally harmless if left alone. Hive location is key in determining if these insects can be left alone or need to be removed.

In a lot of cases, honey bees can be removed by a bee keeper and relocated to a more beneficial location. Some bee keepers will even do this for no charge to the customer. They can also be treated by capable Pest Control companies with a pesticide, killing the hive. If you have a hive located in a wall, it is recommended that the hive be removed after the bees are removed. Old hives are a food source to other bugs and some rodents and it also tends to attract other swarms as a potential new home.

Yellow Jackets and Hornets are most often treated with a pesticide as opposed to live removal. It is recommended that any homeowner attempting to treat a nest on their own do so with extreme care and caution. If not treated correctly, you could risk disturbing the nest and creating a potentially dangerous situation. Yellow Jackets and Hornets are the most aggressive of the stinging insects and will become very aggressive if given the opportunity. If the nest is thought to be a big one, we highly recommend that you contact a professional to assess the situation. It may be worth the cost to have it done right.
